Cosplayer Spotlight-Foxy Badger Cosplay
Foxy Badger Cosplay is a Dutch trans man who’s been cosplaying for 7 years in the Amsterdam area. He enjoys Game of Thrones, Red Dead Redemption, Overwatch, Fallout, Skyrim, The Hobbit/LOTR, Uncharted, The Last of Us, and Black Sails!
What made you get into cosplaying?
“I always wanted to make stuff from films, but never knew it was an actual thing until I saw people do it on tumblr.”
What are your favorite things about the cosplay scene?
“Making friends, watching other people improve, the support people give each other.”
Now, what are some cons or things that could be better in the community?
“Comparing people to each other (or yourself to others), thinking numbers (followers/likes) are a measurement of how good you are, thinking look-a-likes are better than a good make up job, fatshaming and racism (especially from non-cosplaying audience), thinking you can’t cosplay a thing because x or many others have already done it, rushing your work to meet deadlines or get on the hype train, thinking you take ownership of certain techniques, poses, characters, and lewding underages characters”
How does your experience in the cosplay/con scene differ as someone who is marginalized?
“My main issue today is that I still have hips and that I’m not a tall guy, so I feel my work gets overlooked because that would be the first thing people notice instead of the costume. I’m ‘done’ transitioning, so I don’t really get misgendered anymore but back in the day there were the odd comments of ‘why do girls always do good crossplays’ or ‘girls should cosplay girl characters’ but that’s mainly sexism and not transphobia. In fact, I think cosplay has helped many trans people realise to be seen as the opposite gender when they cosplay.”
Any upcoming projects/cos-plans that you’re working on?
“I’m finishing up Arthur Morgan and I’m continuing Ana and starting a Skyrim build for this winter.”
Advice you could give to people wanting to get into cosplaying?
“Don’t compare your work to others. Google is your friend. Kamuicosplay, evil ted, punished props are great sources to start if you want to make stuff. Read aliexpress reviews if you’re buying from them. Don’t expect ‘fame’. You’re doing this for yourself, not others.”
