Give Lil Nas X’s Twerk Hero a Game Of The Year Award
Lil Nas X proves time and time again that no celebrity can internet the way he does. Following the sweeping success of his new song “Montero (Call Me By Your Name),” he’s faced seething parents, and a lawsuit from Nike over his Satan MSCHF sneakers that reportedly have a drop of human blood. “Montero” also caught wind of a viral TikTok trend where you see creators playing a role in Hell while pretending to catch Lil Nas X sliding down his pole. All this in just a week and a half.
But that wasn’t enough. Lil Nas X just dropped a new game, Twerk Hero, where you play as him twerking his heart out to the new hit single. I thought it was a prank until I hit the direct link under his tweet, and was met with a home screen and a big PLAY button staring at me.
Lil Nas X’s Twerk Hero was created by Roni Games in Unity, and is a fun re-skin of the studio’s original game with the same name. Twerk Hero was first released last month, and is currently sitting at the Top 100 Music apps on IOS. The controls are simple whether you’re playing on PC or on your phone: the player moves the character’s butt by holding the screen and dragging it to the direction of the incoming marks to collect points. If you collect all the marks, you get a perfect score.

In the original game, Twerk Hero has 5 different beats and locations, as well as a challenge and freestyle mode to give plenty for the players to choose from. In the Lil Nas X version, you are given four levels to go through, each with a harder difficulty than the last. In the first level, you are greeted by his backside in Calvin Klein shorts during his Adam and Eve part of the music video, with a goal of 50 marks for his booty to catch. Next up, are the Greek colosseum with, what I like to deem, the Marge Simpson court, and Hell with, the task of hitting more marks than before. Once you get to the last level, the game changes it up with a front view of the rapper himself, with Satan admiring in the background.
Lil Nas X knows what the fans absolutely love from him and has no problem feeding them wild and surprising content that keeps the word out about his music. Take a look at his first hit single for example, “Old Town Road,” with several remixes with other artists that took fans by surprise (like RM from BTS, Diplo, Young Thung, Mason “Yodel Kid” Ramsey, and Billy Ray Cyrus), his unforgettable red carpet looks, or his Gen Z humor power housing the socials he is on. Seeing a fun game with his glistening ass staring back at me is surprising, but nonetheless, very on-brand.
“Montero” blessing your ears in a mobile game? I smell a 2021 Game of the Year contender, fingers crossed.
