Watcha Playin’-Stardew Valley…On Switch!
Despite saying that I wouldn’t for months now, I’ve submitted and bought Stardew Valley for my Switch. I originally started playing it on my laptop after watching a Waypoint stream of them playing and deciding to give it a shot. It came with a Humble Bundle I had bought months before, so I downloaded it. And it took over my life for like a week. It’s actually the first game in a while that I’ve spent hours playing without realizing it. But eventually, other games came up, and it kind of fell to the wayside.
I had said I wasn’t going to buy it on Switch, because I knew a portable version would make it way too easy to get sucked back in. The only reason that changed is because of my mom. As I’ve been getting more and more serious about writing and podcasting about video games, my mom has upped her attempts to understand games and why I’m so interested in them. During my original stint with Stardew, we had a conversation about how she wishes she could have a farm, and I realized it would be the perfect game for us to play together. But life got in the way and it never happened. After a recent discussion about her wanting to learn more about games again, I decided I wasn’t going to let it fall through the cracks again, and bit the bullet. Stardew Valley is now on my Switch.
My mom and I haven’t gotten the chance to play together yet, as we’ve both been busy with work, plus the new season of Dancing With The Stars is out and that’s our favorite mother-daughter activity, but I’ve only had it for three days now, so I’m not too worried about it. Getting a little hands-on time with it, since it’s on a different system, seemed like a good idea before attempting to teach my mom how to play. Thus, Goth Farm 2.0 was born.
Going back to the valley made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. I was excited to be back in the town and plug away at clearing my land and getting my crops going. This time, I went with a river farm instead of a monster farm, because having so much access to fish seemed like a great way to have a supplemental income. Too bad I am genuinely terrible at Stardew’s fishing mini-game. Hopefully I’ll get better since I have many rivers to practice in. I didn’t get super far in this playthrough, but I’m very hyped to reap my first parsnip harvest, and you better believe this time I’ll be ready to switch them out when the seasons change.
