Visual Novel Nook: Ghosts of Miami

Ghosts of Miami is a visual novel by Pillow Fight set in 1986 Miami starring a 23 year old Cuban PI named Chelo. Inspired by her father’s disappearance, she’s decided to open her own investigation firm to help reunite missing people with  their families. Like most people who are just starting out, Chelo’s finances are a little rocky, so she’s trying to find cases to help pay the bills.

The cases are well done, providing great clues and pointing you in the right direction, but only if you’re paying attention. Your choices also have an impact on the outcome of your investigations; if you make a wrong choice or come to the wrong conclusion, the person you’re looking for might stay missing, or your perp might get away.

Ghosts of Miami also does a great job in its handling of the realities that surround victims of crimes, and law enforcement. It doesn’t shy away from the racial or class aspects of why crimes are ignored, and treats sex workers and queer people with respect and empathy. Police corruption is common, and people of color, queer people, sex workers, and every intersection in between knows that if they’re in trouble, the cops won’t help. But an indie Cuban PI probably will.

There’s a great cast of characters who help you out, ranging from a sweet EMT who just wants to help and maybe take you to coffee, to a member of the Escobar family who happens to be your childhood best friend. Most of these side characters are romanceable, and the dating aspects blend well into the actual crime solving. For example, you can hang out with one love interest because she has connections at the high school that could get you info on a potential suspect. Her company is just an excellent bonus.

Visually, this game is a treat. It has a vibrant 80’s aesthetic and probably the best loading screens I’ve ever seen. Everything feels bright and fun, which helps ease some of the tension in later cases. The music also adds to this vibe, keeping lighter scenes fun, and heavier ones serious.

If you want a rad mystery visual novel, Ghosts of Miami is a must. It’s available on Steam, Itch, and Humble store for $14.99.
