Highlights from the GDoC Expo Direct 2022 Indie Showcase

This past weekend marked the seventh annual Game Developers of Color Expo, and the third ever GDoC Expo Direct. Part of the GDoC Expo 2022 Direct festivities was the Indie Showcase – fifty minutes of trailers and announcements highlighting indie games from developers of color around the world. We’ve gathered our favorites from the showcase to highlight for everyone’s games to watch lists.

Forever Lost | Glitch Games

Forever Lost is a point-and-click horror game set in an abandoned mental asylum. The player character wakes up here with no memory of who they are or how they got there. Their objective becomes exploring their surroundings in hope of recovering their lost memories and being able to move forward.

YOLKED – The Egg Game | HardBoiled Studios

YOLKED – The Egg Game is an early access title about an egg with buff arms escaping from a kitchen and the house beyond. It’s a kinetic, physics-based platformer where you guide the anthropomorphic egg around obstacles and environmental hazards. Along the way, you can collect various costumes while your fellow eggs cheer you on.

Project Anomaly: Urban Supernatural Investigator | Dark Sciences

Project Anomaly: Urban Supernatural Investigator is a photography game that kind of looks like TOEM, but for tracking down and taking photos of cryptids and ghosts. Players investigate these creatures and befriend them by exploring the open, 2.5D world and taking photos. There’s currently a demo available to try out on Steam.

A Taste of the Past is a cooking game about a young woman named Mei who is trying to cope with the loss of her mother by reconnecting with her Chinese heritage through cooking. Mei boards a train after losing all of her mother’s recipes, only to find that many of her ancestors have boarded with her. She has to recover her mother’s noodle recipe while learning about grief, self-love, and healing. It’s currently available to download for free on Steam and itch.io.

Who Is He: Let Me Out | 4Happy Studio

Who Is He: Let Me Out is a horror game about a ten year-old boy named Alvin who is trying to find his mother and escape from Mata Koetjhing, an ancient, cursed Javanese village full of demons. Along with his pet spider and little sister, Alvin has to solve puzzles and brew potions to banish the evil creatures in the village.

M.Duck | Andrew Lee

M.Duck is a “roguelite gallery shooter” game about a duck that can use magic. Magic Duck is taking on the enemies in the tower that suddenly showed up and has been shining light on his pond every night when he’s trying to sleep. The game is currently available on iOS and Android, and is coming to PC soon.

Do Not Buy This Game is a comedy walking sim with The Monster at the End of this Book energy. Players are met with a disembodied game developer as the narrator who doesn’t want you to interact with the game, especially a button that takes money from the narrator’s account every time it’s pushed. Players can check out a demo on Steam now.

Hill Agency: Purity/Decay | Achimostawinan Games

Hill Agency: Purity/Decay is a futuristic, noir detective game where you play as Meeygen Hill, a tough private investigator working in one of the last remaining North American cities. Like any good noir story, Meeygen’s life is turned upside down when a beautiful woman with a difficult case barges into her office. This game is inspired by the likes of Oxenfree and The Shiva, and allows players to solve who did it without any Game Overs or restarts for wrong answers.

Kabaret | Persona Theory Games

Kabaret is a Southeast Asian visual novel set in the realm of Alam, where regional monsters and creatures from folklore reside. The main character Jebat was once a human who has been cursed into becoming a monster. He takes shelter in a teahouse called Kabaret, where he reads tea leaves for customers to find information about how to break his curse. There’s a demo available to try now on Steam.
